My first picture book is out!

How to Make a Peanut Butter Sandwich in 17 Easy Steps is now available, published by the wonderful team at Owlkids Books.

It’s a silly, over-complicated and animal-centric recipe for a lunchtime classic. I’ve had raccoons juggling, beavers whittling and miniature donkeys stomping inside my head for so long, it’s amazing to actually hold this book in my hands! You can order here:

… and, my first nonfiction book is also here!

Writing and illustrating Operation Cupcake: How Simple Machines Work for Kids Can Press was such a fun project. It tells the story of two highly capable mice, Gingersnap and Macaroon, who have a hankering for a tasty cupcake. But there’s a problem: the cupcake is high on a counter, under a heavy glass dome, with a snoozing cat in the way. Through the use of the six simple machines (and a helpful Bernese Mountain Dog), they figure out how to get their tasty treat back to their mouse hole before the humans return. It was so much fun creating the graphic novel-style panels and weaving a story throughout the more factual information. I have always loved explaining how things work, and coming up with diagrams and experiments to show exactly how to leverage simple machines was the perfect challenge.

I had such a great time illustrating, hand-lettering and designing the bookWhat a Waste: Where Does Garbage Go?” for the fine folks at Annick Press. The topic can be a little heavy and dismal, so they wanted fun illustrations that would keep it feeling hopeful. The book, written by Claire Eamer, is full of interesting trashy tidbits, and the subject matter provided ample opportunity to sneak in some of my signature rats & crows.
